The Rotary Vane Vacuum Pump Demonstrates Superior Vacuum Efficiency

Vacuum pumps are essential in the packaging of fresh foods. A recent comparative study revealed surprising results when evaluating the efficiency between a screw vacuum pump with a sealed chamber (SVP) and an oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump (RVVP). Although an initial study favored the SVP, more realistic test conditions distorted the results. On the contrary, an independent test conducted by TÜV Süd under simulated industrial conditions clearly demonstrated the advantage of the RVVP.

Test 1: Biased Configuration

Initiated by the SVP manufacturer, this test compared pumps under unequal conditions. While the SVP operated with demand control, the RVVP ran continuously, resulting in higher energy consumption for the latter. However, the RVVP could also have been configured with similar control systems, which did not happen.

Test 2: Realistic Simulation

The second test simulated the working cycle of a vacuum packaging machine under realistic conditions. Both pumps operated continuously with identical vacuum reinforcements. The results consistently favored the RVVP, showing:

  • Higher evacuation speed: Up to 11% faster.
  • Lower energy consumption: Savings of up to 73% depending on the vacuum level.
  • CLower specific energy consumption (SEC): Indicating higher efficiency across the entire operating range.

Technical Design: The Key Difference

The RVVP, specifically designed for vacuum applications, has precise tolerances that minimize internal leaks and reduce energy consumption. Its lower operating speed (1000 rpm) decreases wear and maintenance costs. In contrast, the SVP, adapted from compressor technology, exhibits reduced performance in critical pressure ranges and requires additional control to prevent overloads.

Conclusion

Under realistic test conditions, the RVVP demonstrated clear superiority in efficiency and performance over the SVP, establishing itself as the best option for vacuum applications in the food industry.
